Poetry in Music I

People in New Atlantis really enjoy listening to music. In fact, people here used to believe that music connected the citizens in such a way that it helped them live in "harmony".

Some citizens danced to music without even noticing the words (lyrics); some citizens read the lyrics of the song as if they were poetry and let the poetry direct their lives. Pivo is interested in knowing how people on Earth relate to music.

Choose a song that is popular in your world. Listen to the music. How does this song make you feel? Do you relate to this song? Think about the lyrics. Do the lyrics have any meaning that you think helps people live in harmony?

Write us a letter and let us know how particular music affects you. It will help us decide if we would enjoy listening to music with words.

All about Friends: Story 1

Social Commitment: Compassionate Wisdom

Each of us belongs to many communities -- for example, our family, our school, our city, and so on -- and for me, any community is made up of friends. Our friends change as we change communities, but we remember our old friends. We tell stories and write about our friends.

In New Atlantis, we don't easily tell stories about our friends. Sometimes it's hard to make friends, and sometimes, people don't want to hear or read stories about old friends. But we can learn from you!
In this quest, you will read a story in which a New Atlantis teenager tells you about her experiences with friends. Then, you write back to share what you felt and thought about this story.
Your Goal(s):

Your goals are to: 1) Pay attention to the story in the resource page below. 2) Write back with answers to these four questions:

  1. How did you feel toward the character?
  2. What else would you want to know?
  3. How do you think the character felt?
  4. When have you felt like the character did?
Be sure to answer all four questions.

Resources
I have included the story which will enable you to read the story for yourself!

Let me tell you about someone I once knew.
I didn’t fit in at my new school. I would have to have been someone I’m not, to fit in. I can’t dance, I can’t socialize, and I can’t even talk to people, unless they’re talking about cats or diving or something else I know about.
Up to this year I’ve had only one really best friend, Catherine. Sometimes I think that there will be only one best friend in my life, and maybe Catherine was it. I had never known anyone like her.
She was always losing her keys, could never remember where she put things, and yet always managed to get things done and make it look easy, too. She told me once, “I don’t let things get to me.”
Catherine’s a very graceful swimmer. Sometimes I’d sit down on the sand and watch her swim out, pretty far, right through the waves like even they couldn’t bother her. She says that I’m too easily bothered by things.
